JUST NOW

JUST NOW

n the work ‘just now’ this long-contemplated concept expands into a cinematic installation. Black waxy fabrics extend from the ceiling down to water-filled trays. In the film projected upon them, a child tries again and again to pour a bucket of water over his/her own head. The childish joy makes the Sisyphus task bearable. Associations with baptismal and purification rituals come to mind. The pouring motion enables permeability in the spectator; it turns into a prerequisite for the overcoming of ones’ own limitations.

Membrane

Membrane

The “membranes” were initially created in my residency studios in Iceland, Finland and South Africa. The intention is to visualize the forces that can accompany us on the process of CROSSING, of crossing thresholds. Sometimes we need a new skin, which the “membrane works” can function as. I designed them as correlations to certain states of consciousness or as models for positive emotions and life energies. So on my journey, I made these new skins as a kind of transformation tool.In keeping with the theme of “CROSSINGS”, I also work with the material “wax skin” here. The haptic and visual appearance of the silk dipped in wax reflects the theme of crossing borders in the phenomenon of the skin as a membrane, as a harmonious relationship between inside and outside. It is always about the here and now, about thresholds and crossing them. My own approach to the topic of boundaries and crossing them is primarily through the experience of color. I connect with the qualities of color as an equivalent of what constitutes life. In this sense, the “membranes” are a kind of life companion and protector.

Cocoon

Cocoons

One of the fundamental motifs in Katharina Lökenhoff’s work is the cocoon as an archetype of developmental potential and creative power.

Eine der Grundmotive im Werk von Katharina Lökenhoff ist der Kokon als Urbild von Entwicklungspotential und Schöpferkraft.
